The Catlin Arctic Survey Project

We’ve recently been working on a short film for the Catlin Arctic Survey, which is an incredible project, which hopes to answer one of the most important environmental questions of our time: how long will the Arctic Ocean’s sea ice cover remain a permanent feature of our planet? This film was created as a summary of what last years (2009) project was all about. Now in its second year, the Catlin Arctic Survey continued the project into 2010. The film required several interviews that we shot, a series of VFX and motion graphics that we created, along with the music (composed by Elliott) and the editing! Phew.

The Knowledge Films – Camping

Back in 2007 we suggested, to outdoor retailer Cotswold Outdoor, an idea to create a series of presenter led outdoor advice films for their website. Films that would help their customers make, decisions about outdoor clothing and equipment, as well as give tips and inspire them to get into the outdoors. Helping a customer choose the right pair of walking boots, the right climbing rope or offering advice on safety in the hills can be a difficult task outside of the retail environment; using video is a perfect way to impart this expertise.

In December 2007 the first chapter of ‘The Knowledge’ videos was launched on Cotswold Outdoor’s website, presented by Paul Deegan. The films proved to be so successful with Cotswold’s customers that a second series was commissioned just three months later.

Over the last few weeks we’ve been working on the fourth series of films, this time about camping. The complete series can be viewed on Cotswold’s website.

Filming in Exmoor

Elliott and Al glued their hands to their heads

Last week was glorious weather, I’m sure we’d all agree with that. Apart from the obvious disruption and Billions lost from the grounding of flights due to the volcanic ash thing (our sound-man Elliott was particularly pleased about this, as it meant there was no background aircraft noise!), you could say it was a perfect week. Well it was for us, as we were fortunate enough not to be disrupted by the ash and were lucky enough to be out filming on a beautiful piece of land in Exmoor National Park, very near Lynton. We are currently working on a series of four films for a client, they are short (5 min ish) presenter-led advice films on outdoor related subjects and in this instance specifically about camping and how to do it!

Aliens landed on Exmoor in tents

We’ve been working on them for a few weeks now, not just the filming, but the production for the whole project. That is coming up with the ideas, the creative, the scripts, the locations, props, camera angles, direction etc. for each and every individual shot. It’s a bit of a gamble when it comes to scheduling in a shoot, especially one that is outdoors and outdoor related, it helped that the weather was so good and enabled us to work more efficiently and is ultimately a more pleasant experience!

Presenter Paul Deegan works his magic

So we’re back in the office now and are about to embark on a few weeks worth of editing to get the final cuts out for the four films in mid May. We look forward to posting them up soon.

Bristol Docks

It’s pretty difficult keeping up with the pace of technology at the best of times, not to mention trying to keep your finger on the pulse when it comes to new filming and post-production equipment. But this is precisely what we try and do. It’s important for us to try and keep abreast of what new equipment is out there, which might help us do our job better, achieve a higher level of creativity or simply be more efficient.

So from time to time we hire in some equipment to test out to see whether it might be worth us using it in forthcoming productions, before we decide to invest in it, or hire out again for a specific job. It never actually occurred to us that some people might be interested in the result of some of our tests… so we’ve posted it here!

Rab & Podsacs films live

We spent most of January and February this year working on some films for our new client Rab, who manufacture outdoor clothing and equipment, (specifically sleeping bags) for extreme activities. Alongside Rab are Podsacs, who make rucksacks for climbing and mountaineering. We produced these films from concept through to output, managing the whole process throughout. The films are being launched this week, we’ve posted them below:
